Easy Garden Path Ideas

Happy Earth Day! What better way is there to enjoy mother nature than by strolling through a beautiful garden path?

A well designed garden path can create an inviting atmosphere for you and your guests, plus it can enhance the functionality of your garden.

gardenpath

There are numerous ways you can create a alluring and fun garden path, you just need to think outside the box! A path that curves and disappears around a corner draws attention to what lies beyond. A straight, narrow path can make a garden appear longer, especially if the end point is hidden. We’ve collected some of our favorite garden path ideas to help inspire your design.

Idea #1. Elegant Entry with Techo Bloc’s Maya Stepping Stone

Garden Path Techo Bloc Maya Step

Techo Bloc’s Maya stone slab is an excellent way to enhance your garden path. These slabs come in 4 different earth tone colors to mimic the natural beauty of real stone.

Idea #2. Broken Beauty

Garden Path Irregular Bluestone

Irregular Bluestone slabs give off a rustic look. The irregularity and sharp edges of the stone will contrast nicely with the delicate softness of your flower surround.

Idea #3. Clean Lines

Garden Path Granite StoneGarden Path Granite Stone and Pebbles

Lay granite or bluestone pattern stock in crushed stone to create a minimalist garden path with clean lines.  You may opt to surround the granite with black Mexican beach pebbles to give a striking contrast.

Idea #4. Playing with Texture

Garden Path Crushed Stone

To expand on Idea #3, try creating landings out of bluestone or granite pattern and alternate with crushed stone. These varying layers of texture and rectangular forms will create visual appeal.

Idea #5. Staggered Lines

Garden Path Staggered Garden Path Staggered

Instead of laying stone in a straight line, mix it up by staggering 12″ x 36″ stone planks. The alternating stones draws the eye from side to side and creates an elongated appearance.

Idea #6. Geometric Intrigue

Garden Path Brick

Garden Path Brick

There are many versatile ways to lay brick and one option for your garden path is to make basket weave squares. Brick is timeless and it’ll add charm to your garden.

Another option is to surround a 12″ x 12″ bluestone square to create colorful garden steppers.

Additional Benefits of Outdoor Porcelain:

Best Sand for Paver Joints

What is the best sand for paver joints?

This is a great question to ask because you want to maintain the durability and longevity of your newly installed pavers. Polymeric sand is a high-tech mix of graded sand and binders, specially formulated for the filling of narrow or wide joints when installing pavers, slabs or natural stones, or when replacing existing joints. Unlike conventional sand, it locks in place and remains stable. It softens when wet and firms up when dry to better resist soil movements.

PolymericSandFinish

Polymeric sand is the ideal choice for filling in the joint spaces between your pavers because it offers many advantages such as,

#1 Secures Pavers: Polymeric sand keeps your pavers locked in place while also remaining flexible. The composition of polymeric sand includes both a high-tech mixture of graded sands and polymer which allows it to remain solid and bonded but flexible enough to move during freeze/thaw cycles without shifting the pavers out of place.

#2 Weather Resistant: Polymeric sand can withstand high levels of moisture. Other traditional sand used for jointing cannot and will wash right out of the paver joints thus causing the pavers to pull apart. Polymeric sand solves this common issue because it is waterproof and is flexible enough to withstand the expansion and contraction that occurs with the change in seasons. This increases the longevity of your pavers and provides easy maintenance.

#3 Helps Prevent Weeds & Pests: Polymeric sand that is used to fill the joints prevents plant life from growing up in between the stones. In addition it helps prevent weeds from growing that are airborne because the seed cannot root itself into the solid composition of the sand. The sand also prevents ants from coming up between pavers and building nests.

Before you purchase polymeric sand, keep in mind that not all are created equally. We recommend using Alliance® Polymeric Sand for all your hardscape projects because of their meticulous attention to detail and commitment to providing the BEST performing polymeric sand and dust in the industry.

Alliance’s production process employs extensive testing during the manufacturing phase, followed by the laboratory phase, and finally conducting extensive field tests.

Outdoor Kitchen

Make your outdoor living space the envy of every charcoal chef in the neighborhood!

Stone Veneer Grill Island

Bring together the pleasures of good food, warm weather, and the company of friends and family into your backyard! With an outdoor kitchen or grill island entertaining has never been better; you can prepare meals and be around your guests with minimal time spent running back and forth between the kitchen.

Transform a boring stainless steel grill into a wonderful work of art with natural stone veneer. Stone veneer comes in many different colors and shapes so whether your style is Rustic, Colonial, Contemporary, Modern, Tuscan or Log Cabin, you can create a beautiful outdoor kitchen that is tailored to your unique taste.

Pre-assembled outdoor kitchens and grills are available but our helpful guide will show you how to spice up your outdoor grill by creating a natural stone veneer grill island at a fraction of the cost!

7 Step Guide to Build a Natural Stone Veneer Grill Island

Step 1: Build the Frame

Before you begin your project there are a few things to take into consideration. Think about your entertaining needs and your budget. You will also want to determine the best location for your kitchen, the size requirements, design layout, countertop placement, and the appliances you’ll need. Finally, you must choose the best materials and equipment for accomplishing all your goals.

ConcreteBlockThere are many options you can build an outdoor grill island out of but using concrete block as your frame is affordable, weather and fire resistant, and can be easy to work with. A good height to build your frame up to is 38 inches. This is a comfortable height for elbow resting and food preparation.

Be sure to build on a paved and level surface. Create open boxes in your design to allow for steel doors, drawers, or other storage compartments or to conceal a propane tank for a gas grill.

Step 2: Calculate Stone Veneer

Stone Veneer Grill Island Boston BlendCalculate the square footage of the area. Veneer stone is available in corner pieces and flat pieces. Corners are sold by the linear foot and flats are sold by the square foot.Be sure to subtract the areas that will be used for doors and other storage openings!

Step 3: Stone Veneer Layout

Lay out the stone on a flat surface to create a visual template of how you will place them on the finished grill island. It is helpful to start with the corner pieces and then fill the inside. Pieces may need to be cut to lay flush against the ground. Cut the pieces with a wet saw using a carbide or diamond tip blade. Be sure to wear protective eyewear and follow proper safety measures when cutting stone veneer.

Step 4: Apply Polymer Modified Mortar

Stone Veneer Grill Island GroutWe recommend using Ardex X5 which is a highly versatile, polymer modified mortar with an easy to apply creamy consistency. Ardex X5 will adhere to concrete block without the use of fabric or wire mesh. Using a trowel, apply a 1/4 inch layer of Ardex X5 to the back of the stone. Place the stone onto the wall and wiggle it gently to ensure even coating and a secure bond. If the mortar seeps out  use a damp cloth to wipe it away.

Step 5: Point

Once the stone is in place you can grout the joints using Type S mortar mix. Use a joint slicker to carve out the wet mortar joints. Clean the stone with a damp cloth if any mortar gets on the surface of the stone.

Step 6: Install Fixtures

Stone Veneer Grill Island Door

After the stone has dried (24 hours) install cabinet doors, fixtures, and a counter top. TLC Supply carries an assortment of bluestone, granite, blue mist granite, brownstone, and limestone treads which we can custom fabricate to fit on top of your outdoor grill island.

4 Helpful Tips for Your Next Paver Pool Project!

TIP #1: To install a patio around your pool you would follow the same steps as installing a basic patio (click here for paver installation guide). The difference is that you will need to use an expansion joint around the perimeter of the pool that sits between the patio pavers and the pool coping.

There are several reasons why it is necessary to use a strip foam expansion. First, it will assist in freeze thaw cycles and even in hot weather because it will allow for flexibility and movement of the pavers. Secondly, it will help prevent any water from seeping down behind the pool shell and weakening the concrete joints.

To use the foam expansion you would simply place the foam around the perimeter of the pool coping. Then install your patio pavers as you normally would. The foam expansion will help keep out any poly sand you use to fill the paver joints. Next remove the 1/2 “ tear strip on the foam expansion and fill the void with a self-leveling pool caulk.

Tip #2: To keep pool caps from popping off you may want to use a fiber reinforced mortar such as Ardex X 32. We recommend Ardex X 32 because it is designed to handle the most challenging moisture sensitive stone, granite, marble, as well as  tiles, both interior and exterior. Ardex X 32 is durable, easy to use, has great bonding capabilities and controlled setting time, and it will not warp or shrink.

Tip #3: You can even dress up the landscape around your pool even more by incorporating decorative plants and flowers.  Add an accent trim to your surrounding garden with patio edging pavers or granite cobblestones. You can build raised planters with pavers or even with retaining walls.

Retaining walls and stone walls surrounding the pool area also serve as privacy walls. Incorporate stone pillars and fences to keep the area gated and safe while adding a touch of elegance.

Adding a cabana or pergola gives you and your family added protection from the sun and serves as an additional area for entertaining guests day or night.

Tip #4: If you want to take it to the next level you can incorporate other outdoor elements.

Feed your hungry guests from a new outdoor pizza oven (pre-cut and ready-to-assemble) and stay outside longer with fireplace and fire pit kits for those chilly nights. Pre-assembled fire pit kits are can be installed quickly and fit into any budget!

Protect Pavers During Winter

Protect Pavers and Other Hardscape & Masonry this Winter!

Snow Comic

Protect pavers with these 4 simple tips! Keep these in mind this winter to help prevent any damage winter may bring  to your pavers, brick, or any other hardscape products . I’ve also included 3 Tips on how to protect your roof and prevent any water damage from ice dams. So let’s get started!

4 Tips to Protect Your Precious Patios, Driveways, and Walkways:

Safe Ice Melt for PaversTip 1: Use an ice melt that does little damage to infrastructure and environment. We recommend ice melts with a blend of Magnesium Chloride which is a safer alternative to rock salt. Calcium Magnesium Acetate is another smart alternative because it is biodegradable and safe for pets, masonry, and the environment. Mr. Magic® is a great premium ice melt brand that is fast acting and long lasting! It works at temperatures down to -25° Fahrenheit.

Mr. Magic is safe for masonry, decks, roofing, pets, and the environment! Always make sure the ice melt label says it is safe for hardscape and masonry products. If you cannot find any ice melt that is safe for hardscape then you can sprinkle sand or cat litter for traction. If you opt to use regular (non-safe) ice melt then just be aware of the risk and use it sparingly. But I do have to say this – Please do not risk your safety or the safety of others to protect your hardscape! If an area is heavily coated with ice then go ahead and use the necessary amount of ice melt (whatever it may be) to prevent slips and falls.

Rubber Snow PlowTip 2: Metal blades on shovels and plows can scratch the surface of your driveway, walkway, or patio. If you hire a plowing contractor be sure they use a rubber or polyurethane blade on the plow. Be sure to use a nonmetal shovel as well.

Paver freeze thawTip 3: If you are using a snow blower please be careful of pavers that may have moved or lifted during freeze and thaw cycles. Avoid any “lippage” which can occur when a paver, brick, concrete, or even cobble stone edge sticks up from another. This “lip” can catch on snow blowers, plows, and shovels.

Tip 4: On a warmer day you may want to sweep off any excess snow or products on your pavers. This step is not necessary but it never hurts! This can help remove any harmful deicer products and prevent future damage.

3 Great Tips for Removing Snow from Your Roof:

We have been getting some great questions from customers asking how to remove snow from their roofs. Here are a few simple steps you can take to eliminate snow and ice dams which can otherwise wreak havoc on your roof. As always please proceed with caution when removing snow from your roof, be aware of any icicles that may be hanging, have someone assist you with a ladder, and wear protective clothing and eyewear.

Roof RakeTip 1: Purchase a roof rake to help alleviate some of the stress the snow may be putting on your roof. A roof rake is a solid piece of metal or plastic about 16 to 20 inches wide on the end of an extension pole, which allows you to rake or pull snow off the roof. Please refer to manual for proper handling and safety instructions.

Ice DamsTip 2: Diminish ice dams with panty hose or long socks! It is that easy! All you need to do is fill the leg of a panty hose with ice melt and lay the hose onto the roof so that it crosses the ice dam and slightly hangs over the gutter. Use a long handle stick to position the hose or sock if necessary.

Ice pucksTip 3: Do-It-Yourself Roof Melt Tablets. Roof Melt Tablets are little pucks that you can easily toss onto your roof to help prevent damage from ice dams. The way these tablets work is the salt and water mixture melts and drains down, melting the ice in its path. If this is not done then there is the potential of snow and ice buildup underneath shingles which can then seep into interior walls and attics. A simple way to make your own roof tablets is by following the same steps in Tip 2. This is where your old mismatched socks come in handy! All you need to do if fill up socks with ice melt, tie them, and carefully toss them all over your roof.  Ice melt socks are porous and flexible and they are just as effective at removing ice dams.
